Alleghency County Health Department Reminds Parents About Dental Care

In observance of National Children's Dental Health Month, the Allegheny County Health Department is reminding parents that the time to start caring for your children's teeth and taking them to the dentist for regular checkups is a lot sooner than you think. Parents should start cleaning their children's teeth as soon as the first tooth comes into the mouth, and the first visit to a dentist should take place no later than their first birthday. Even before a baby's first tooth erupts, running a damp cloth over your baby's gums following feedings is recommended to prevent buildup of damaging bacteria. Once any teeth are showing, they should be cleansed at the end of day with a soft child's toothbrush and water.

Brushing with a small amount of toothpaste and water can begin by the age of two or sooner, when your child is able to spit out and not swallow the toothpaste. Flossing should begin when two teeth begin to touch. Children usually can take over their own brushing and flossing by the age of 6 or 7, when they have the fine motor skills to do the job on their own.

Drinking from a cup is recommended by a child's first birthday, because extended use of a baby bottle can increase the risk of tooth decay. After a child's first visit to the dentist, the parents should schedule regular cleanings and checkups at six-month intervals. If the tap water in their home isn't fluoridated, they should ask their dentist to prescribe routine fluoride supplements. Sealants should also be considered to protect the primary molars against tooth decay.
